Protesters clash with police after vote to legalise same-sex marriage in France

Right-wing opposition lawmakers who oppose the bill have asked the Constitutional Council, France's highest court, to rule on whether the bill is constitutional.

French President Francois Hollande pledged to legalise marriage and adoption for same-sex couples during last year's presidential campaign.

The measure passed easily in the Socialist-majority Assembly, 331-225.

The bill will become law once Mr Hollande signs it into effect.
