The Anatomist: Gunther Von Hagens

Fergus Shiel

Oddly appealing British documentary on the notorious anatomist/artist.

Ghoulish Gunther comes across as kooky rather than sick and twisted.

Professor Gunther von Hagens is the notorious anatomist who has become a multimillionaire by pioneering a technique for preserving human bodies and then showing off his handiwork at gory public exhibitions across the globe.

Von Hagens was an odd child. Forced to wear his sister’s cast-off knickers because of his East German family’s perilous financial position, and then to spend a lengthy spell in hospital because of hemophilia, his boyhood delight while holidaying on his uncle’s farms was cutting up calves’ hearts.

Nowadays he seems surgically attached to his fedora, enjoys nuding up for the Berlin Love Parade and shelters his ever thrifty 85-year-old father in a shed at the bottom of his garden.

Von Hagens has been doubly condemned for exploiting the dead and for sourcing cadavers and body parts from Russia and China, with members of Falun Gong alleging he uses the remains of executed political prisoners. Von Hagens, who was jailed by the former East German regime for political dissent, appears to have at best a cavalier attitude to the ethics of body-part procurement.

Still, the controversy has been great for business. His travelling exhibition of „plastinated“ cadavers and organs has attracted almost 10 million paying customers in Japan, Germany, Austria and England. He invented this technique on his birthday in January 1977, by using a vacuum to replace natural body fluids with a plastic that both preserves and enables the corpse and organs to be displayed in their lifelike state. Using lasers and a meat carver, he has gone on to perfectly cross-section his plastinated people.

This oddly appealing British documentary tries desperately to convince the viewer that von Hagens is a modern-day Frankenstein – „the Walt Disney of Death“ – but the admittedly ghoulish Gunther comes across as kooky rather than sick and twisted. He’s a one-trick, one-man freak show with a fascination for innards that’s apparently widely shared.
